EU fuel bargains boost for holiday drivers13 Feb 2015

Holiday cheer for drivers heading to the continent

Drivers heading to the continent for the half term will see their fuel bills slashed as a plunging Euro and low oil prices combine to give low pump prices.

While motorists in the UK are still paying about 107p per litre for petrol (the 4th highest price in the European Union) the fuel is cheaper almost everywhere else across the EU, including  tourist destinations like:

  • Austria – 86ppl
  • Spain – 86ppl
  • France – 92ppl
  • Germany – 96ppl

Here in the UK diesel currently sells for about 114p per litre (the highest price in the EU):

  • Austria – 80ppl
  • France – 83ppl
  • Spain – 83ppl
  • Germany 88ppl

(The full tables are below or else you can view the data interactively – and routinely updated – here for petrol and here for diesel.)

Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said:

“It’s a case of happy holidays for the tens of thousands of Brits who will be driving on the continent this half term. The low fuel prices seen here are being eclipsed by those across Europe. Motorists might be tempted to fill up before they cross the Channel but thanks to the strong pound they might be better off waiting until they get off the boat in places like Calais.”
