For fox sake slow down18 May 2010

Caution urged by play on words

It seems as if the Highway Code needs some updating.

An official looking sign has foxed motorists using a country road between Wheatley and Waterperry in Oxfordshire, but you won’t find mention of it in the drivers’ bible.

It simply reads:

‘FOR FOX SAKE SLOW DOWN’

Jo Abbott, who works for a motoring research charity and took the photo, said:

“Working for the RAC Foundation I thought I was up to date with my road signs but this is a new one on me. It made me laugh, but perhaps there is a serious point to it. Despite its rural setting, this is a busy and fast bit of road. It seems someone has got fed up with speeding cars and decided to try and do something about it. To that extent the sign has worked. I certainly slowed down for a second glance.”
