Stonehenge
Campaign for a Traffic-Free Stonehenge
Welcome to the RAC Foundation's dedicated Stonehenge/A303 website.

Everyone knows that action is desperately needed to improve the A303 past Stonehenge:

· To tackle congestion – nearer London, the A303 is a dual carriageway. It shrinks to a single-carriageway past Stonehenge, creating a serious bottleneck and an accident blackspot.

· To protect the environment – at the moment the A303 is just 200 metres from the stones. The situation has been described as a “national disgrace.”

· To help businesses and tourist destinations in the South West – the A303 is one of the major routes to the South West.

There is only one solution which meets the needs of the environment, transport and the World Heritage Site. A deep-bore tunnel, which will take the traffic away from the stones, has already been agreed by a Public Inquiry.

The deep-bore tunnel does cost more than a surface route. But it is essential to protect this unique site.

The RAC Foundation believes it is time for the Government to give the Published Scheme, including the 2.1km deep-bore tunnel, the go-ahead.

If you agree, please sign the petition, which will be presented to the Prime Minister, and use the link on the left to email your MP.
