This first chart shows the annual spending by national and local government in the UK since 1988/89 and also the combined income received by the Treasury from fuel duty and VED. It is in outturn prices. The chart was initially created to complement a report for the RAC Foundation by David Bayliss – Public Expenditure, Taxes and Transport: Land transport in Great Britain.
This second chart is the same as above but inflation adjusted.
The third chart shows total road spending as a proportion of fuel duty and VED income.
