Texting behind the wheel impairs drivers' reaction times by over one-third (35 per cent) according to a study carried out at the Transport Research Laboratory on behalf of the RAC Foundation.
This was worse than being at the legal drink-drive limit (12 per cent slower) and driving under the influence of cannabis (21 per cent slower).
Yet despite the dangers, in a Facebook poll nearly half of UK drivers aged 18-24 admitted to using SMS whilst driving.
