351,000 penalties issued
Some 351,000 penalty charge notices (PCNs) were issued to road users in London for bus lane infringements in 2016/17.
The analysis – based on data supplied by local authorities to central government – shows that this was up from 330,000 in the previous financial year but below the peak of 409,000 seen back in 2006/7.
All London boroughs except Bexley, City of London, Greenwich, Kensington and Chelsea, Redbridge, Sutton and Westminster enforce bus lane restrictions, together with Transport for London.
Of those councils which do enforce bus lane restrictions Lambeth issued the highest number of PCNs, 44,000. Next came Kingston upon Thames and Barking & Dagenham (29,000 each) and then Ealing (25,000).
The study – by transport consultant David Leibling – also shows that 1,236,000 moving traffic offences were detected and punished by PCNs across the capital in the same year. These offences include banned turns and box junction infringements.
