Motorway service station comment01 May 2009

Commenting on today’s [Friday 1st May 2009] Which? Car motorway survey, Philip Gomm of the RAC Foundation said:

“The whole point of service stations is to encourage motorists to take a break in the interests of road safety. If the price of food, drink and fuel puts them off stopping then this could have a serious effect on the rate of accidents on motorways. It also undermines the Government’s attempts to continue reducing the number of those injured and killed on the roads. If the contractors’ argument is that they need to charge higher prices to stay in business then there might be a case for Government subsidising them to make sure vital services remain available and hard-pressed motorists aren’t the ones who suffer.”
